Our Butterfly Writing...A Sneak Peek...

Watching our 5 beautiful butterflies emerging from their chrysalises this week was a pretty amazing experience! We did a lot of observations and reading and had many discussions about our Monarch Butterflies. These experiences gave the children a lot of fuel for some incredible writing.

Here is a sneak peek of some of the writing that has been happening in Room 3 lately (pop into class to view the full stories)...

The  butterfly finally came out of their chrysalis. It flew clumsily around the classroom.

Sam had a turn at looking at the butterflies. They were Ninja, Steve, Stripes, Molly and Rosie. We love our butterflies.

When the butterflies came out the wings were crinkly and it stayed still for a very long time.

Wow. Today the last butterfly hatched. I was the first one to see it. When it first hatched it’s wings were crinkled and crumpled.
 By Sam

I missed the butterfly hatching this morning. I missed it and Sam saw them.
By Felix

The butterflies were flying clumsily. I wanted to have a touch of it. I didn’t want it to go to it’s new home.

Today when I got to school Olivia told me that the last butterfly had hatched. It was crinkly, wrinkly, crinkled and wet. The other one that had hatched yesterday fluttered clumsily around the classroom.

Woohoo! Three of our chrysalises have hatched but where are they? I must find them.
By Hannah

We did butterfly everything, it was fun, fun, fun! It was Tuesday, the next day, that Room 3 had one more. It had crinkled wings and they were delicate.
By Hunter

Do you know how you know if it is a girl or a boy? I think you tell by checking its name tag! No, don’t be silly! You see if it’s got a spot on its wings. A girl butterfly has no spots.

I found a butterfly in the art bay. It is colourful and black.
By Koen

Whoopee! We had to find the butterflies. It was a mystery. There was one on the caterpillars and one in the art bay. The wait was over.
By Josh

The butterflies cracked open because they were ready. Come and watch, they were drying their skin and wings.
by Summer

On Monday I knew our butterflies were going to come out when I was at school. I was right, 3 butterflies came out of their chrysalises. 2 more need to come out and one is black . The children screamed that  3 butterflies come out.
By Katia

Woohoo! It’s finally over. Now it was cool when the butterflies went clumsily around the classroom and one of them was riding one of the caterpillars we made and it was funny.
By George

“Woohoo! Look Miss McKenzie, one butterfly has hatched!”
We were amazed. It slowly came out. We know if it is a boy or girl if it has got a dot in the middle of its wing. If it is a girl it will have no dots. It has some wet, crumpled, delicate wings.
By Isabelle

Whoopie! It was exciting, it was butterfly day yesterday and it hatched this morning. It’s wings were all crinkly when it came out. After lunch we got to hold it. Georgia got the freaks when it climbed up to her hair.
By Kazia

This butterfly was flying. The wings were coloured wings. I liked the wings too. It opened today and it was fun to see.

It was a clumsy butterfly but it looked awesome. Some people got butterflies on their head and hands. I will love them.

When we were doing maths I noticed there was one butterfly who had hatched. We were very excited. We saw it fluttering clumsily around the classroom. The wings were very delicate.
By Charlee

Yesterday morning at maths time, one butterfly hatched from its chrysalis. When it finally managed to wriggle its way out it started flying clumsily around the classroom. We knew it was a male because it had 2 black dots.

Butterfly Day

When Miss McKenzie arrived at school on Monday she found two Monarch Butterflies on our swan plant! A third butterfly had hatched also but was no where to be seen...we later discovered it in the art bay!

As soon as the butterflies were spotted we knew what this meant...BUTTERFLY DAY!!
We did butterfly maths, butterfly art and butterfly writing. We even got up close and personal with one butterfly. It was a very busy day!!

One butterfly really liked our Monarch caterpillar art!

During Maths time our 4th butterfly hatched...look at how crumpled the wings are when the butterflies first emerge from their chrysalis.

Here we are taking a peek at number 4. How lucky we were to get 4 butterflies in one day!

The new butterfly on Sam's finger

The butterfly really liked Georgia! Kazia was very excited!

Georgia wasn't too sure if she liked the butterfly getting so close to her!

Kazia, Katia and Hunter closely examining the butterfly

Butterfly number 4 was a girl because she doesn't have the 2 spots on her wings
We released our butterflies on a beautiful sunny Monday afternoon - they flew straight to this plant just outside our classroom. They really liked the purple flowers.
Here we are with our butterflies on the plant. We are just too intrigued by these butterflies to even look at the camera! :)

Ronald McDonald Teaches Us Road Safety

On Thursday last week Ronald McDonald came to Gore Main School. He taught us how to cross the road safely. He was really funny and he did some cool acts. He taught us to stop, look and listen before we cross the road.

No More Caterpillars!!

All 5 of our wonderful classroom caterpillars have now made their chrysalises. We have a long two week wait ahead of us as we wait for the transformation to be completed and our butterflies to emerge.
There are 5 chrysalises hanging from our swan plant in this photo...
Can you spot all 5?

On Monday we were lucky enough to actually see a caterpillar forming a chrysalis. Mrs Miller was in Room 3 that morning and we watched the caterpillar as it shed its skin revealing the green chrysalis underneath. The skin which is known as the exoskeleton dropped off. We thought this was a bit yucky! Then the caterpillar wriggled and twisted and turned as it made the chrysalis. We then looked at the amazing golden detail on the chrysalis it is very pretty! With Mrs Miller we learnt lots of new things about our caterpillars.
Look at how much it wriggles as the chrysalis is forming

Here you can see three stages of the chrysalis making process:
1. In a J
2. The caterpillar with its skin already shed and half way through the process
3. A competed chrysalis

The exoskeleton on this chrysalis didn't fall off it is still attached at the top...pretty cool to see!

Look at that amazing golden detail. I wonder how they do that?!

A caterpillar half way through the chrysalis process.

It has been so much fun to watch these amazing creatures in our classroom.
Hopefully we will get some of the writing we did that morning with Mrs Miller posted on our blog later.
