Our Fractions Feast

Our focus in maths is on fractions! We have been taking about equal parts or fair shares. When we cut a whole into halves, thirds, forths, fifths etc each part must be equal (the same!)

A big thanks to Toni (George's Mum) for her help during maths time today!

Fractions Quiz: (Write your answers down and check them)
1. How many equal parts will there be if I cut my banana into forths? What do we call one equal part?
2. How many equal parts will there be in thirds? What do we call one equal part?
3. If I cut a triangle shape in half how many equal parts will there be? What do we call one equal part?

Answers are at the bottom of the page

We began with cutting apples into equal parts...

We found that mandarins are already divided up. But they are not really in equal parts so they aren't a true fraction. Equal parts (fair cuts) are incredibly important in fractions!!

We cut each apple into eighths
We are eating 1/8 each

We have 1/8 each (one eighth)

Yum!!
The bananas were trickier to cut into equal parts as they have a bendy shape and the ends come to a point.
The children noticed this and really grasped the idea that each part must be equal. Well done Room 3!

How are you getting on with finding fractions in your own house? They seem to be everywhere!

Quiz Answers:
1. There will be 4 equal parts. Each equal part is called 1/4  (one forth or one quarter)
2. There will be 3 equal parts. Each equal part is called 1/3 (one third)
3. There will be 2 equal parts. Each equal part is called 1/2 (one half)
